Open Tenniel (Version 1.0) – Open Source Alice in Wonderland Image Library

I have always been a huge fan of John Tenniel’s classic woodcut images from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Knowing that they’ve long been in the public domain, I assumed I’d be able to find some high quality versions online that would be free/open source.

What I found is that all the were free options were, well… frankly garbage. Low quality scans, with scant detail, that did not do the classic images any sort of justice. However, if one is willing to pay (and pay a lot!) some people offer very nice (vectorized, high resolution) versions available at high cost, from stock photo sites. The cost is often $70+ for full rights to a single vector image. And there are 94(!) of them.

And these insane prices are for images that are in the public domain!

Yes, it takes work to create nice vector (or high res) versions of these, but not (in my view) at a level that justifies ripping people off.

As such, I’m proud to announce the release of a new project: Open Tenniel.

I have created beautiful vector (.svg and .eps) and high resolution bitmap (.png and .jpg) versions of all 94 images.

And all are dedicated to the public domain. For details (and downloads), please visit the project page:
